Fano

Fano is a cosy village by the sea and has a beautiful historic center that is still partially walled. The city has a marina and fishing port, so if you like fresh fish you can go here. There is a market every Wednesday and Saturday.

Fano was a Roman city and was then called Fanum Fortunae. Emperor Augustus renamed it Colonia Julia Fanestris. In 9 AD he had a city gate built that still stands today. But Roman influences can be seen in more places. After Rome, Fano has the longest city walls, as long as 600 meters. The Decumanus (main street) still runs through the city and there is also a Forum Romanum, which is located under the city and is therefore not visible.

The Teatro della Fortuna on the Piazza XXII Settembre is worth seeing. This beautiful theater is a small version of the world famous La Scala opera house in Milan.

In July, the annual jazz festival “Jazz by the Sea” takes place in Fano. Artists from home and abroad perform at various locations in the city. A must for jazz lovers!

Every weekend during summer there is a nice market, in a charming location in the old center. During the so-called Sassonia sotto le Stelle you can get acquainted with the creative and artistic indulgences of local artisans and artists. The market is on Saturdays and Sundays, from around seven in the evening until midnight.
