Jesi

In the 14th century Jesi, a city with more than 40.000 inhabitants, was the capital of an independent city-state. It owes its city walls and towers to this. The city is beautifully situated, between hills and vineyards, in the middle of the area where the famous Verddichio wine is made. Jesi is also known for its many pleasant terraces.

The center of Jesi consists of two parts. A newer part with chic shops and bars and a beautiful old theater, Theatro Pergolesi. Through a gate you can enter the medieval center, with narrow streets and picturesque squares.

The most beautiful square is Piazza Federico II, at the highest point of the city. It is surrounded by beautiful buildings and museums. On Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. there is a weekly market here. Other places to visit include the cathedral San Settimio, with impressive bronze doors, the many churches including Chiesa di San Nicolo and the Palazzo dei Priori, a beautiful building that now serves as a museum with finds from Roman times.
