Gola del Furlo

At about 20 minutes by car from Casa Bosco, between the towns of Acqualagna and Fossombrone, is the Gola del Furlo. This is a spectacular limestone gorge, which has been eroded by the Candigliano River over millions of years. Along the river runs a piece of the antique ‘Via Flaminia’, the road that was built by the Romans in 220 BC between Rome and Fano. Emperor Vespasian has had dug a tunnel, which is still in use.

There is a beautiful autoroute directly along the river, but you can also enjoy hiking or mountain biking in the green area around the gorge. There are a lot of beautiful views. In the direction of Fossombrone, the Candigliano flows into the Metauro river and at that point the Marmitte dei Giganti is formed. A spectacular canyon which you can view from the bridge “di Diocleziano” near the hamlet of San Lazzaro. At this point you will also find a path on which you can descend into the canyon.

At the town of Furlo you can swim in the river, or eat truffles in one of the two good restaurants. In the town you can also find the visitor center of the Gola del Furlo, at Via Flaminia 37.
